Hotfix rhinestone transfers are one of the most popular and cost-effective ways to add glamorous, sparkling embellishments to all types of apparel, including T-shirts, hoodies, jeans, bags, and custom fashion garments. With premium adhesion and long-lasting sparkle, our custom hotfix motifs can withstand repeated washes without falling off or fading — but the final durability and visual effect largely depends on correct application.
In this guide, we will share the standard professional hotfix transfer application process with a heat press or household iron, helping you achieve perfect, flat, long-lasting rhinestone decoration results every time.
What You Will Need
-
Hotfix rhinestone transfer motif
-
Heat press machine / Household flat iron (no steam function)
-
Clean garment or fabric
-
Teflon sheet or parchment paper
Step 1: Prepare & Clean the Fabric
Before application, make sure the fabric surface is clean, dry, and flat. Remove all dust, lint, and wrinkles. Do not use fabric softener before applying hotfix transfers, as residual chemical ingredients will weaken the adhesive viscosity and cause stones to fall off after washing.
For best results, we recommend using pure cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics, which are the most suitable materials for hotfix rhinestone transfers.
Step 2: Position the Hotfix Transfer
Place your hotfix motif on the desired position of the garment. The transparent adhesive film should face upward, and the rhinestones should fully contact the fabric surface. Adjust the angle and position carefully before pressing, since the transfer cannot be moved after heat pressing.
Step 3: Preheat the Heat Press / Iron
Set the temperature to 150°C–160°C (302°F–320°F). Turn off all steam functions completely. Steam will destroy the hotfix glue and affect the adhesion effect.
Preheat the equipment for 3–5 minutes to ensure stable and even temperature, which is essential for uniform adhesion of the entire pattern.
Step 4: Heat Press the Transfer
Cover the entire hotfix pattern with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper to protect the rhinestones and fabric. Start pressing with even pressure.
Heat Press Machine: Press firmly for 15–20 seconds with medium and steady pressure.
Household Iron: Press repeatedly back and forth with even force for 20–30 seconds to ensure every corner and stone is fully heated.
Step 5: Cold Peel the Film (Key Step!)
Do not peel the transparent film immediately while it is hot. Allow the transfer to cool down completely to room temperature.
Once fully cooled, gently tear off the transparent protective film slowly. If any stones stick to the film, lay it down and heat press again for a few seconds, then repeat cold peeling.
Step 6: Secondary Pressing for Higher Durability
For better washing resistance and ultra-strong adhesion, we recommend a secondary pressing after peeling off the film. Cover the pattern again with a protective sheet and heat press for another 10 seconds. This step further solidifies the hotfix glue into the fabric fiber, ensuring no stone falling off after multiple washes.
Key Tips for Long-Lasting Hotfix Effects
-
No steam during the entire pressing process
-
Cold peel only — hot peeling easily causes stone displacement
-
Avoid excessive temperature over 165°C to prevent stone fading
-
Wait 24 hours before the first machine wash for maximum durability
-
Turn the garment inside out when washing to protect the rhinestones
